Dear Parent/Carer,
I would like to start this letter by saying that it has been a fantastic first term for me at Westfield Sports College.
The students are open, friendly and show a real drive for success. It is also clear that Westfield has dedicated, caring and talented staff that are determined to make a difference.
To illustrate this, the student and staff raised £1766 for Children in Need this year. This is a record for the College and shows how everyone was prepared to work together.
It is now a year since the snow caused much disruption to schools across Sheffield. If inclement weather affects Westfield this year we will inform Radio Sheffield, a parent text will be sent and it will be updated on the College website. Also we have just refurbished the College’s website and it should contain much more up to date information. Please do take the chance to take a look at it at www.westfieldsportscollege.co.uk.
We are about to launch our “Climate for Learning” policy which will revisit and reaffirm our expectations of students in their learning, behaviour and uniform. It will also see the launch of our new “Vivo Miles” reward scheme. Students will be bringing information home soon.
From January 2012 we have reorganised how subjects are managed within the College. The following list explains this and key staff of our new faculties:
- English – Mr M Norfolk
- Mathematics – Mrs S Smith (Deputy Head) temporary
- Science & Technology – Mr J Bedford
- Business, ICT & Languages – Mr M Ward
- Humanities (History, Geography, PHSE, RE) – Mr D Dickinson
- Expressive Arts (Art, Drama, Music, Y7 Challenge – Miss J Mansfield
- Sport – Miss M Fletcher
Our first task in the New Year is to review our curriculum in light of national changes to qualifications and to ensure it is best tailored to increase attainment and progress of all our students.
As we go into the New Year it is vital that we plan for the needs of our students, parents and community. Next week the College will be issuing surveys for you and your children to have your say. I urge you to take the time to complete it and return it before the end of term as we will use the findings as a move forward.
The immunisations scheduled for 30 November 2011 have now been rearranged to Monday 23 January 2012. Year 8 girls will have their second HPV immunisation and their tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster and Year 8 boys will have the tetanus, diphtheria and polio booster.
The last day of term is Friday 16th December 2011; the College will be closing at 1.15pm for students and they will be able to leave from 12.30pm. Lunches will be provided for all students requiring them. First Buses are unable to re-route their normal services 28,30 and 730 into the College car park at this time but the TM bus service 720 will be available at 1.15pm for students requesting that service.
Can I please remind you that we will be operating lessons as normal in the morning so attendance is vital and I ask that students leaving for the afternoon do not visit the primary schools in the area as they are likely to be operating a normal school day.
College re-opens to students on Thursday 5th January 2012 at 8.35am
I wish you all a very Happy Christmas and look forward to continuing to work with you all in the New Year.
Yours sincerely,
Mr A Ireland
Headteacher
