Options 2012

Dear Parent/Carer,

In recent years Y8 students at Westfield have made option choices and started GCSE and other courses in Y9. We are currently reviewing our entire curriculum structure both in line with the national changes to qualifications and to provide our students with the most appropriate selection of options.

As a result the current Y8 students will not be making option choices this year. They will be starting GCSE studies in core subjects but will only take the exam when they are ready to maximise achievement. Current Y8 students will be able to select their GCSE and other course options in a year’s time when they are in Y9.

Students currently in Y9 and Y10 will have already started GCSE courses last September. Our review of the curriculum will allow students to either take their exams now and obtain their qualifications or extend it to at least another year. Where courses do finish there will be the opportunity to take further options.

We need to make sure that the time invested in courses so far is not wasted and students take their exams at the correct time so as to meet or exceed their target grade. Therefore at the moment we are looking at each student individually to put together the most appropriate options package for next year. I appreciate that this will make the options process a little later this year but it is important that we get it right and clearly communicate next year’s choices.

I appreciate your patience in this matter and full information will be available by Monday 27th February 2012. For Y9 students only this is also the Progress Evening and I urge you to attend this meeting. In the meantime the process is being overseen by Mr Hadfield and Mr Adams who will answer any other queries you may have.

Yours sincerely,

Mr A Ireland
