Government scraps plans for English Baccalaureate Certificates (EBC)
Clarification for parents and carers of Y9 students
If your son or daughter is currently in Y9 you will have been involved in the recent options process where the English Baccalaureate (EBacc) was discussed. This is a measure of achieving grade C or better in GCSE English, mathematics, at least two sciences, geography or history and a modern foreign language. Many students have selected a combination of options that will enable them to achieve the EBacc.
On Thursday 7 February 2013 the Government announced that it was abandoning plans to introduce new English Baccalaureate Certificates (EBCs) as a replacement for GCSEs. Despite the similar names these were entirely separate from the EBacc discussed in the options process. EBCs were originally planned to be examined in 2017 so it would have been the current Y7 students that would have been first affected.
The English Baccalaureate (EBacc) that has been discussed during the recent Y9 options process has not been abolished and, in fact, will become a more prominent feature of the accountability measures used to judge the effectiveness of schools in the future. Therefore, the recent announcements have no impact on the options that Y9 students have just selected in the last few weeks.
