On Monday 14th October, over 60 Westfield Sports College students attended the Sheffield D of E Presentation at the prestigious Cutlers Hall. Students received their Bronze, Silver and Gold Awards from the Lord Mayor and other special guests. Katie and Molly Summerhayes also gave a presentation during the evening about their skiing achievements.

Congratulations to all of the students involved.

Wider Participation – Climbing

OP_widerparticipation_1

On Friday 11th November, Mr Clist and Miss Prosser took our first Wider Participation group of this academic year to the Edge Climbing Wall.  The Wider Participation Scheme is aimed at Year 8 Gold Medalists and as a reward for good behavior, they spend a day doing outdoor activities with the Outdoor Education department.

We took a group of 7 enthusiastic girls – Grace, Ellie, Skye, Ellie, Rachel, Chloe and Megan.  We started with a few warm up traverses, then we progressed to climbing with ropes and the session finished with some bouldering.  They all did brilliantly and they were all very happy to give everything a go.” – Mr Clist

From their comments it was clear the girls really enjoyed it:

I was scared at first and then when I did it, I wanted to do it again and again” – Chloe

I wasn’t very confident at first and then I got more confident and I want to go back!” – Megan

It was really great to challenge myself, it was brilliant” – Rachel

Bronze Duke of Edinburgh 2011/12

Bronze D of E evening training sessions have started!  Every Monday after College a group of enthusiastic Year 9, 10 and 11 students meet in the school canteen to train for their expedition section of the D of E Award.  So far we have looked at how to put up a tent, what to eat on expedition and how to put together the camping stove.

About Greta Cottage

Westfield Sports College is lucky enough to own Greta Cottage, a 22 bed bunkhouse in the Lake District.  This is a great resource for the Outdoor Pursuits department with access to fantastic activities such as climbing, ghyll scrambling, raft building, walking, kayaking and canoeing in the Lake District National Park.

Whilst in residence, students help college staff with the catering, washing up and cleaning of the Cottage.

In the past we have run very successful Climbing Club trips and Gifted and Talented Residentials here and we are looking forward to running many more residential trips here in the future.
